Ankle Sprain/Torn Ligament

Ankle Sprain/Torn Ligament

I sprained my ankle about 4 months ago.  I wore an ankle brace for 5 weeks and did physical therapy for 3 weeks.  I had an MRI 3 weeks ago due to continued pain and swelling (Dr. thought there may be a tear to the peroneal tendon).  Results showed tendons are fine however the ligament (he did not tell me which one and I forgot to ask) is still torn and there's a lot of scar tissue. He also said the ankle is unstable. He recomended more PT and a waiting period of 3 months to see if the ligament will heal on it's own instead of doing surgery right away.  Unfortunatley I am unable to do PT due to work (I was advised not to come in late or leave early after my first round of PT).  I am experiencing pain and swelling on a daily basi and I am extremely frustrated. My question is do you also recommend waiting 3 months to see if the ligament heals on its own?  Thank you in advance for your reply.

Hello,

Dear Chloe661, You have to understand that ligament tears are nagging injuries.
I liked the approach of your Orthopedician because he is going conservative and if it does not work he will go for surgery.
The 2 most important things for you presently are work and Physical therapy, I suggest you to concentrate on both of these and if everything goes on fine and the ligament heals then you may not need surgery.
Ice your ankle for inflammation and you can take occasional pain killers and take care of your ankle.

Take care!
