Ankle pain/multiple fractures

Ankle pain/multiple fractures

I am a 50 year old female with a history of lupus.  Approximately 4 years ago, I sustained a right ankle fracture after a fall which required an ORIF repair.  The ankle healed well and normal activity resumed.  About one year ago, I began experiencing intermittent pain and swelling to the area.  I did see an orthopedic surgeon who did not feel the hardware needed to be removed at that time.  Five months ago, after another fall, I sustained a fractured femur to my left leg, requiring an ORIF with intermedullary rod placement.  The femur is healing quite well, but I am experiencing much more pain and swelling to the right ankle.  I don't know whether this is due to the increased stress/pressure to the right extremity due to the left femur fracture, or complications with the right ankle hardware.  Help please!
Thank you ...

Hi there!

Well, without a physical examination and probably a few tests, it would be difficult to determine the cause of the ankle pain. Causes could include infections, inflammations, degenerations, mal-alignment, contractures, vascular insufficiency, nerve trauma/ impingement/ pressure, re-fractures etc. I would suggest a re-evaluation by your orthopedician for an evaluation of the above mentioned possibilities. After a cause to your discomfort is determined, management can be initiated accordingly.
Hope this was useful.

Take care!
