Hi there!

Avascular necrosis occurs due to disrupted blood supply to the bone, where there is inadequate compensation by other arteries leading bone degeneration. The exact cause of the disrupted blood supply is not known, while a few risk factors have been identified including trauma, alcoholism, increased cholesterol, hypercoagulable states, hypertension, alcohol, decompression sickness, a few drugs/ medications, steroids, vasculitis, thrombosis, metabolic issues etc. There are a few cases when no particular cause can be attributed to. Despite the cause, specific management remains unchanged; while with an identified risk factor, additional measures to control the risk may need to be taken.
Hope this information is helpful.

Take care!
