Base of 5th metatarsal broken -- what to expect

On Oct 31 I stepped off a curb into a hole (I guess) and rolled over on my ankle, heard a loud POP!  At first thought I'd broken my ankle as intense pain, but realized shortly that I could move my ankle, but outside edge of foot hurt like crazy.  Walked on it a bit, with weight on my heel, not putting foot down, until I could get back home.  Couldn't tolerate the weight of the ice bag on that spot, so headed for ER, where the doctor said it was most likely fractured.  They wrapped it in a very tight tensor bandage and had me come back for an x-ray the next morning.  The doctor said it was broken "in a few places", but when I asked to see it, the major break is at the base of the 5th metatarsal, right at the base of the bulby part, extended up into the bulb.  I don't know where the other break is, will ask on Monday when I have a followup x-ray.  I am currently in a short fiberglass cast, non-weight bearing.  The ortho consult wanted to wait a week to see if any healing starts as there is thought I need a pin as there is separation at that break site.

I've read lots online here, and want to know what is the most important thing I need to be sure of.  Some sites say "You can weight bear immediately", others say "Don't weight bear for 3 weeks as it'll take a long time to heal".  Do I insist on seeing the ortho (not sure how much my own GP knows about these types of fractures)?  Do I stay off it even if he says I should put weight on it???  How do I know if it is an avulsion fracture or a Jones fracture?  (my research has shown that the areas of a Jones fracture are not clear cut, so mine could be either way).

And how do people manage on crutches when non-weight bearing?  My arms, wrists, and chest muscles are sore.  (My crutches are adjusted correctly as I had them after knee surgery only a year ago).  I'm just not very strong and to suddenly go to major weight lifting (in essence) is tough on me.

I am doing leg lifts, etc. that I was given after knee surgery to help keep my non-weight bearing leg as strong as I can.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks!!!
