I need to have my knee scope for a torn meniscus.I have been reading alot a info and I think I am scaring myself out of doing the surgery.Their was a local healthy man that past away after the same surgery from a blood clot.Does anyone know just how often this happens are is it very rare? Should I be this scared.I am 42 and run about 20 miles a week.Does this help to avoid any complication? Thanks for any info....

Hi,
How are you? Treatment for torn meniscus can be done by two methods they are open surgery and arthroscopic method. As with any kind of surgery there is a risk of infection, blood clots and anesthesia related problems, even with arthroscopy. Arthroscopic surgery is a "less invasive" procedure, and when performed for the right indications (meaning the right problems) it is often very successful.

Also, a complete preoperative work up needs to be done for any patient before taking up the surgery. If appropriate care taken, then chances of developing complications is very rare these days.
Discuss with your doctor regarding these issues and seek help.
Best.
