Broken 5th Metetarsal

Broken 5th Metetarsal

I broke my 5th Metetarsal 12 weeks ago, a CT scan at 11 weeks has shown little to non healing with no callus present, why are the doctors leaving me without operating.  I am in an air cats boot and struggling to walk properly.  Do I need surgery?

Hello dear.
Treatment of metatarsal fractures depends on the type and extent of the fracture, and may include:
• Rest. Sometimes rest is the only treatment needed to promote healing of a stress or traumatic fracture of a metatarsal bone.
• Avoid the Offending Activity. Because stress fractures result from repetitive stress, it is important to avoid the activity that led to the fracture. Crutches or a wheelchair are sometimes required to offload weight from the foot to give it time to heal.
• Immobilization, Casting, or Rigid Shoe. A stiff-soled shoe or other form of immobilization may be used to protect the fractured bone while it is healing.
• Surgery. Some traumatic fractures of the metatarsal bones require surgery, especially if the break is badly displaced.
stress fractures of the base of the fifth Metatarsal sometimes show a poor healing capacity. For this reason, many orthopaedic consultants now favour surgical fixation. A small incision is made on the outside border of the foot and a small screw is placed down the middle of the fractured bone. With this method a return to sporting activity is usually possible after 6 - 8 weeks. If the injury involves a displaced bone, multiple breaks, or has failed to adequately heal, surgery may be needed. You need to discuss this with your physician.
