I would go back to the ER if I were you. Cold to the touch and there is still swelling and discoloration. I would demand a doctor to check for circulation. That is a sign. I am not a doctor but have learned pathology, anatomy and phys for massage therapy.
June 2013. I am 47 recovering from a very bad broken ankle. Broke all 3 bones. I have a rod a plate and maybe 8 screws in my ankle. This happened February 2 (4 months ago) This was the most painful severe thing I have ever went through!! And this is a person who was run over by a garbage truck and have 3 bones fused in my neck! That was nothing compared to this...and all this from stepping down from a stair and losing my balance, might have been my long shoe string. What ever this totally *****! I was in the hospital a week after surgery. In a cast for 10 weeks. Now I have a walking Boot and have come to a stand still. The swelling and pain are so severe I think I would be happy to cut my foot off. My Dr. took me off my pain meds cold turkey! I have been back 3 times to my Dr. crying in pain. My toes feel like someone is running a knife over the top of them cutting them. The sides of my ankle feel like a dagger being shoved in and turned sideways. If I try to put weight on my foot, it feels like what ever is in there is making hamburger out of what meat I have left. You can see my screws almost popping out of my skin. The burning and stinging is HORRIBLE...I can't take much more. I am a nervouse wreck, depressed, can't stop crying. The last trip to my Dr. I was accused of seeking pain meds. I have been off them for a month and told him I didn't want them so he put me on GABAPENTIN 300mg. It works a little. This is aweful. Would more surgery help? Taking out my plate and screws? I am desperate!!!
Hey there Bulter ...
My heavens, you have really been having a bad time of it! Do you mind me asking where you live? The reason I'm asking is because the health care there seems to be a bit of a mess! You go to the ER and they missed the fact your ankle was broken, good grief! Here you spent a week walking around on such damage, it makes sense that it only caused more damage. I read everything you wrote and it sounds as though you are doing everything you can to get it better. I believe I recognize that feeling of a hot, sharp sensation - as though someone lit gas on your foot. I broke both bones quite badly in my lower leg and after surgery I had the same feeling you're talking about. In my case it was nerve damage - it felt like someone was lighting matches and tossing them on my foot. Now, in the same area, I have no feeling on my foot.
What does your doctor have to say about the problems you're having? Sounds like you need to see an orthopedist or a neurologist - perhaps both! It just doesn't sound as though your ankle is healing properly. You may have to complain louder in order to get someone to listen to you! But you can't rush the healing process - and some injuries need more time than others. My leg STILL bothers me, even after 4 (plus) years. I had it s-rayed some months ago and the radiologist said that it was still healing!
My heart goes out to you and best wishes for your recovery! Stay in touch!
