Bunion Question

Bunion Question

I recently had surgery on my left foot to remove my bunion and realign my foot as it was bent at a 45 degree angle.  I had my right foot done in December 2010 and 17 weeks later I completed the left foot.  My right foot is progressing along wonderful.  Physical therapy has helped and allowed me to regain control and flexibility.  My left foot in the last 2 weeks is showing signs of reverting back to a bent position.  My big toe is shifting towards my second toe.  My doctor has given me a night splint to keep the toe straight and I see him at the end of the month.  My concern is if I will need to have another surgery to keep this toe straight as I feel like I did pre surgery with pain, my bunion area rubbing on my shoe and massive pain.  What are your thoughts on a successful future and questions to ask my doctor at the next visit and is this normal?

Thanks,

Hi there!

Well, it would be too premature to answer the question at this time. Even with the relevant clinical details there would be a possibility for the foot to correct the alignment with the splint and gradually heal well. However there would be a chance that it may not correct the alignment and a re-surgery may be required. I would suggest following your doctor’s advice for the time being and the condition can be re-evaluated in a few weeks where a better opinion about the prognosis can be given and appropriate management plan decided upon.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
