C6-C7 Herniated Disk

I have been diagnosed (confirmed with MRI) with a herniated disk at c6-c7, with numbness and pain to my left arm. This condition has persisted to varying degrees since 7-04-07. I have done some PT and used a home traction devise for about 4 weeks. Have had one epidural injection which has helped with some pain and range of motion but no increase of strength in tricep or hand. should I be considering surgery? When do I start to worry about long term loss of function in my left arm.

If your protrusion is touching the spinal cord, I would say that would be painful.   Do you have the MRI results in your possession?  Does it state whether you have any stenosis or any nerve root impingement, etc?

If you were getting weaker with your muscle strength, I would venture to say your Neurosurgeon might want to do surgery.  What does he state?  Physical therapy won't cure spinal disorders, even though it may make you feel some better.  Steroid injections are only a temporary pain control measure.

Hi,

The desicion to go for surgery depends on the severity of symptoms experienced. At time even a small degree of prolapse can lead to severe symptoms and surgery may be required. Also, some times even major prolapse can be managed conservatively as the symptoms are not severe enough.
