Chronic Knee Problems

Hi all.  In 2007, I had a VMO advancement and lateral release done on my left knee.  I stopped playing softball, which sucked because it was my senior yr of college.

I followed through with all my rehab and I still do all of the exercises.

My knee has been swelling, popping out, grinding and giving out again.  I havent injuried it or anything...  i saw  a new Ortho on friday as my old ortho doesnt accept my insurance anymore.  He was able to move my kneecap all the way to the side of my leg.

he sent me for an MRI.  He talked about a surgery where screws would be put in my knee.  he also mentioned there are about 60 other surgeries that could be done but none really work.

He also said he could redo the VMO advancement and lateral release again.  Im ehh about it bc I feel if it didnt work the first time, it wont work the second time.

I just wanted anyone's input and thoughts on what i should consider being I cant take this pain and giving out and popping out anymore.

Hi there!

Well, without a clinical evaluation it would be difficult to comment on the situation. It does not necessarily mean that if it a surgery did not give the best results the first time, another would not be beneficial. The prognosis would largely depend on the primary issues(s), associated conditions and the type of surgery. It would be best to discuss this in detail with your treating orthopedician. If in doubt, you may consider a review with another orthopedician as well, regarding the management plan.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
