Complication with Achilles tendon rehab following surgery

Complication with Achilles tendon rehab following surgery

I underwent open surgery to repair a ruptured achilles tendon approximately 4 months ago.  There were no immediate complications from the surgery.  However, my tendon remains extremely thick along the incission line (several times the size of my unaffected tendon).  I am not experiencing much pain, but I do have discomfort in the tendon at the base where it attaches to my heel (slightly below where it ruptured).  The remainder of the tendon feels normal despite the increased thickening.  My doctor is at a loss as to the cause of the thickening/inflammation (says she's never seen anything like it before in all her years of practice).  The inflammation starts and stops exactly where the incission begins and ends.  I have resumed heavy exercise using the stationary bike and elliptical machine (no treadmill).  Any thoughts on what is causing the tendon to remain inflammed?  Or is it something else?

i recently had surgery on my pinky and it too looks and feels twice the size it did before the surgery.  my doctor said it's all the protiens forming scar tissue and as far as my pinky goes, it will be this way for about 6 months.  i can only imagine that since the achilles tendon is significantly bigger than my pinky tendon, that it will be that way for at least as long.. helpful hints my doctor gave me were to massage it often (i do every time i do my therapy exercises [once every hour.])  i wouldn't worry too terribly much about it, from what it sounds like, it's natural.

as far as the discomfort you feel, a question you might ask yourself is are you moving it too much? running, jogging, etc.  though i'm no doctor, i would think it's a bit too soon for such activities.

however, this is just my 2 cents.. good luck.
