Displaced clavicle fracture

My son is 14 years old and broke his color bone during a football game. My son is a star athlete and will be going into High School next year.  He was seen by an Urgent Care doctor who took xrays and confirmed the displaced fracture.  He advised he would probably need surgery.  We were sent to a local Children's Hospital 4 days later and was seen by a doctor who basically spent 2 minutes to tell us he will be in a sling for a couple months and would not need surgery.  My son has been in severe pain the last 4 days.  I understand that this in common and have done hours of research regarding this type of injury.  I know that the majority of Orthopedic Surgeons do not operate but rather let it heal on it's own.  The doctor never talked to me about what may happen in the future if it doesn't heal properly, nor did she specify why she didn't want to operate.  99% of all the articles I've ready of those who've had surgery were satisfied with the results.  My question is... what would you do in this situation? and if you wouldn't operate why not?  His health is obviously a concern so I appreciate any feedback I can get.  Thank you in advance ~ Concerned mom
