Distal Break of R Clavicle

Distal Break of R Clavicle

7/4/09 I was in a bicycling accident and broke the distal end of the R clavicle. The xray showed a feathery sort of break on the inferior side and a mass of white at the acromion process. I was told that surgery was not indicated and was given an ill fitting brace to wear home. I have been using ace bandages to bind the arm to my side. I sustained several cracked ribs as well. Daily I take the arm out and do some slight mobility exercises. I ice it, use my cold laser on it and am supplimenting calcium and vitamin D. I was given a paper with some physical therapy exercises at the ER and told to see the Ortho Dr. That is who told me no surgery is required. I have a physically demanding job,as a massage therapist, I am 56 yrs and would like to continue working for as long as I can. What do you think my chances are that I will be able to avoid surgery and continue my practice?

Fractures of the clavicle unite readily even if widely displaced, hence reduction of the fragment is not essential. A triangular sling is sufficient in most cases. Active shoulder exercises should be started as soon as the initial severe pain subsides, usually 10-14 days after the injury.
Your chances are good if not you always later go for open reduction and internal fixation. Take care!
