Drop Foot

Drop Foot

Hi
I am 56 years old , and I now suffer from "drop Foot" as a result of a disc rupture
which occured after I stood up for a bout 4 hours at work .
After I had an MRI I was diagnosed that a small fragment has touched a nerve , and as a result I got what is called Drop Foot ,and part of my foot and part of my leg have no feel.  I was treated with steroids, while admiteed to the hospital for 5 days , and there was no change in my condition . I am now home for almost 2 months, still no change .

my question is:  could this conditon  have been caused  unequivocally  as a result of the coninuous  4 hour long standing at work?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. Foot drop is condition that develops due to abnormality in the muscles or nerves or anatomical abnormalities involving both. Posture, sitting or standing cannot affect this, but squatting for longer periods of time can cause temporary foot drop in certain patients.
The other causes are nerve damage due to compression, neuropathy, muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis etc. Certain chemotherapy drugs and drugs used for treating multiple sclerosis can lead to foot drop.
Nerve release surgery can be considered if there is no permanent damage to the nerve supplying the foot, which can improve your condition.
Consult a orthopedician in this regard.
Best.
