Ganglion Cyst Pain

by pamelag, Feb 29, 2008 10:35AM
Earlier this week I went to an orthopedic surgeon due to extreme pain in my right hand. I have a hard large lump on the top of the hand near the wrist which looked like a classic ganglion cyst for about 4 months now. The doctor was over 2 hours behind in his appointments and didn’t spend more than a few minutes with me. When I described the pain and its location (deep in the middle of the hand), he told me I didn’t have pain there. I also told him that the tip of my ring finger has been numb for the last month. He said it couldn’t be.

He had me lay down on the table and sprayed something on my hand and then japed a needle into the lump. The pain was unbearable. He told me it didn’t hurt that much. He then extracted a small amount of bright yellow jelly like fluid from the lump. He put a wrist splint on me and said I was done and left the room.

I am a glass artist and my right hand is my livelihood. The lump is still there and my hand hurts worse than before. I now also have numbness in the hand itself. I plan on seeing another orthopedic surgeon and have an appointment for the 11th. It was the soonest one I could get.

My questions are:

1.Can a ganglion cyst cause very sever pain in the hand sometimes runs up my arm like I am experiencing?
2. After doing some research on ganglions, is it normal for the fluid to be such a bright yellow color?
3. When and how long should I wear this brace? It does help some since it prevents me from moving my wrist. When I flex my hand downward, the pain is very sharp and unbearable.
4. Motrin is no longer working to dull the pain. Is there something else I can do to help dull the pain until my new appointment?

Thank you anyone with advice. Also thanks to my daughter for typing this for me. I am very concerned and scared about this as you might imagine.

Update:
Today the pain in my hand is worse.  I had the needle aspiration done on Monday. My hand is also now swelling up between my index fingure and thumb and a nasty bruise is starting on the middle of the back of my hand. The cyst does look smaller in height but seems to be more spread out than it was before. I've been wearing the brace and trying to not use my hand as much as possible which isn't easy since it is my domant hand.

My appointment with the new surgeon isn't until the 11th and I don't know if I should wait that long. Motrin was helping to dull the pain but it isn't doing much any longer. I think I might try some ice packs tonight to try to reduce the swelling. I am a little concerned that the swelling and bruising are just starting now 5 days after having the needle aspiration done. That doesn't seem normal to me but I don't know. Has any one here had this procedure done before?

How are things going with your ganglion cyst? I have one too and it hurts too much, so I have an appointment with a surgeon in a few days. The pain does shoot up my arm.
