Growth plate?

Growth plate?

Hey,
I fractured my Med Malleolus and i currently have two pins holding the tip of it. I was wondering if that prevents growth? is that a growth plate fracture?

Hi there!

A malleolar fracture may or may not pass through the growth plate (depending on the type). Also the lower epiphysis (growth plate) of the tibia fuses with the tibial shaft at about 16-18 years of age, while the medial end (medial malleolus) is expected to fuse earlier (than the lateral end). Hence it would be unusual to have a growth arrest in an individual who is beyond 18 years of age. However it would be best to discuss this with your orthopedician.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
