Hello!

There is a gluteus medius muscle and in relation to the muscle the incisions differ.

The different methods are  (i) Moore or posterior approach, (ii) the Hardinge or lateral approach, (iii)Watson-Jones or the anterio lateral approach or the (iv) Smith Petersen or anterior approach.

Modified Anterio-lateral or Posterior approach is preferred but your orthopedician is the best person to decide the best approach for your case.

Take care!
