Hip pain after fall

My 85 year old father with dementia fell on and hurt his right hip and thigh a week ago.  He was checked by a doctor on the day of the fall and three days later.  No xrays or MRI's were done.  The doctor said there is no serious damage.  "If he had broken something, he could not be walking on it."   He still has pain which seems pretty uncomfortable when he walks, but he says he does not hurt when sitting or lying down, only when he stands or walks. Does anyone know if he could be suffering from something serious, like a fracture, crack, or something, or should I stop worrying and believe the doctor is correct?
