In a cast for 8 weeks, pain in back of lower leg

My husband crushed his ankle; he was in a cast for a total of 8 weeks.  No weight on his leg.  This past week the cast was removed and he was told to get rid of the crutches.  He could even walk without one crutch. If he moves the foot and leg a certain way he has a shooting pain from about an inch above the ankle half way up the lower leg. The doc never said anything about therapy.   Any suggestion?

I'm not a Dr. however,I would highly recommend therapy.If for nothing other than  to avoid bad habits (like improper gait etc..) I too was floored when my Dr. told me to lose my crutches.First of all it is scary & yes, painful.I found a walker helpful, and walking sideways holding onto the kitchen counter kind of gave me courage.Surprising enough, I was able to walk a few steps by myself within a week.(I was unable to walk for approx.10 weeks) One more thing that I found helpful was to take a pain killer about45 min. before I was going to attempt walking and later on I took one before I would go to therapy. Hang tough,it does take time. Best Wishes

Hello!

1) I would suggest you to go for an X-ray to confirm healing.

2) Start going with both crutches.

3) Next week he can use only one crutch.

4) Start weight bearing progressively and do not let him exert immediately.

If required take the help of a physiotherapist and with slow progressive movements his pain will decrease so will his movements increase. He can take intermittent NSAIDs.
