Thank you for your response and information.
Under my primary care instruction I went to the ER and it was determined that I do have severe arthritis in the neck and spinal area. Some of the vertabraes gaps having arthritis are so narrow that they may be pinching the nerves causing the severe pain in the shoulder.
The doctor prescribed Oxycodone, Ibuprofen (800mg), and a muscle relaxer. After takuing two doses of all three since 10AM (12/29/2014). Some of the pain has relaxed. However, the pain in the shoulder has gotten worse during the night.
I will try the ice and warm compresses.Until then I remember I have a Tenz unit and will use it to see if I can interrupt the pain signal.
Your pain could be consistent with cervical spine disease. Usually, the first step is an appointment with your doc who can make an exam, and probably order Xrays.
Physical therapy may help move "things" around in there to take the pressure off a nerve. However, I'm speculating to the nature of your injury -- never a good idea.
In the mean time, Ice alternating with hot/wet compresses, light massage, and support of the head and neck while sleeping, for instance, a rolled up towel under the neck, might give you some relief.
Be careful with NSAIDs -- if they're not effective, discontinue. ANd always take NSAIDs with food to protect the stomach lining.
Best wishes.
