Information on pelvic fractures

About 15 months ago I fell from a ladder onto my asphalt driveway (5 ft), broke my left hip which was replaced,  and just now they have found I also have 2 fractures in left side of my pelvis which cause MUCH pain.  My Doctor wants to wait another 6 months to see if they will heal themselves.  The fractures are in the origional x-rays of my broken hip but no one saw them until I kept complaining of pain and not being able to put weight on my left leg, not being able to walk without a cane.  Is the waiting a good idea?  What can I do to help the healing, if anything?  It has already been 15 months.
