Itch on foot

I have an itch on the bottom of my foot. It's on my right foot opposite the ball, a little bit towards the outside edge. I don't have any itches anywhere else on either feet. The problem here is that this itch has been here for over a year. It has it's good times and it's bad but when it does get bad I'll scratch at it to the point to where I'm breaking the skin and digging into it! What can be causing this and how can I deal with this?
