No pain in torn Rotator Cuff

No pain in torn Rotator Cuff

I am in my upper 20’s and I stay extremely active.  I lift weights (consistently) two to three times a week, play competitive tennis, kayak, bike, and run (sprints).

I was diagnosed with a rotator cuff tear last week.  I am pretty sure it happened in a basketball tournament over three months ago.  I remember having a lot of pain in my shoulder the night after playing, but it gradually went away over the coming weeks.  I have full range of motion, strength and nearly zero pain.  The only problem or pain I have is when throwing objects and serving in tennis.  It feels like the joint is coming apart and the pain is very intense deep in my shoulder.  Needless to say, I stopped doing those activities a few months ago hoping the shoulder would heal on its own.

After three months the shoulder pain associated with the throwing motion did not go away, so I decided to visit an orthopedic.  He prescribed an MRI which lead to my diagnosis of a torn rotator cuff.  I’m schedule for arthroscopic surgery in mid July.

My question is this.  I have a few vacations planned for this summer and I don’t want to ruin them by being stuck in a sling.  Before the MRI I imagine I did about everything you could do exacerbate a torn rotator cuff.  I can’t imagine I could do anymore damage now that I know to be careful.  Is it OK to put off this surgery for another month until mid August without further damaging my shoulder?  Would it be OK to continue weight lifting if I only perform low volume low weight workouts with minimal shoulder movement and perfect form?  Again, I have no pain from the activity, and I keep everything below shoulder level, but I don’t want to do anymore damage.

Thank you for your help!
