Numbness both hands have severe numbness

I am an 85 year old female.  Could not have a knee replacement because of severe stenosis in spinal lumbar region.  Now I have severe numbness in all fingers Have seen a neuologist who wants me to have a MRI with probably a cervical laminectomy.  The MRI is scheldued for Monday Jan 4  .  He will do a muscle test before then.  I am in aa whweelchair because mof the stenosis of the lower spine causing extreme weekness..  Is there anything else I should do or know about.  He told me to be extremely         so I do not sever the spinal cord.    Please help me with your excellent advice......Eileen

Hello!

The involvement of spinal nerves due to the stenosis you are facing is the reason of weakness in your upper and lower limbs.

If your cervical vertebrae are involved there can be issues with your fingers as the radial nerve, median nerve and ulnar nerve are main branches from brachial plexus from your cervical spine. Your lower spine problems in the lumbar vertebra cause problems in your legs.

Taking your age into consideration it is very difficult to suggest you any lifestyle changes. It is best to consider all options after your MRI. Follow the instructions of your neurosurgeon.

Take care!
