Numbness after back surgery

Numbness after back surgery

I had back surgery with fusion of L3-4, with pins and screws and what my surgeon called a "cage" on February 12th of this year.  Four days later I had a second surgery to repair a dural tear.  Immediately after the first surgery, I noted numbness in my bottom and between my legs (which was NOT present at any time before the surgery).  It has been six months since the surgery and there has been no change in the numbness.  The problem for which I had the surgery has improved - the surgery was essentially a success; however, I now have a new set of problems caused by this profound numbness.  I have had UTI's, have chronic constipation, and have developed hemorrhoids.  Also, I have difficulty sitting for more than 10-15 minutes because of pain (don't understand how numbness and pain can exist in the same area of the body, but it's true!). Over the past few months I have asked my surgeon about this.  He has been telling me that the sensation will return.  At my last visit a few days ago, he told me that the numbness could not have been caused by the surgery and that I should see my PCP for a referral to a neurologist, urologist, or a gastroenterologist, or possibly all three.  What is going on?  I feel totally confused and betrayed by my doctor.
