Opinions on my knee injury?

by AnDen02, Aug 05, 2008 05:01PM
This is what happened:

I was playing basketball on March 9, 2008 when the guy who was guarding me tried to steal the ball. I turned to run after it and extended my LEFT leg out to step. It seemed to overextend and when it came down, it felt a little weird. No pop or pain, just felt a little weird. Kept playing for the remaining minute and half, but didn't move around much because I wanted to come out since it felt a little akward.

About two weeks later, I went to see my bro-in-law's friend who is a chiropractor to get it tested. He said there was very slight swelling and did various physical examination tests. He said he didn't think I tore anything or had any problems with the meniscus, but that I basically damaged it about as as much as I could without really doing harm and probably hyperextended my knee.

He told me my quads were really, really weak and my hamstrings were extremely tight, so he told me I needed to workout my legs to strengthen them and build the support for my knees. (I'm a skinny guy - 5'9" 130 lbs). I did that for about 2 months and on June 13th it miraculously felt better and more normal for about two weeks. I played basketball several times with no problem. After games there was no soreness or swelling. Then when I went to San Antonio at the end of June, did a lot of walking, and when I came back home, it felt weird again and has since. I haven't worked out again since before going to SA, so that may be part of the problem.

I went back to the chiropractor and told him what happened and he re-tested it and said he still didn't think it was anything to be concerned about. I asked if I should get an MRI and he said he didn't think so at this point because it seemed to respond to the strengthening after a couple months and recommended I continue doing that. I'm just a little nervous to start doing it again while it feels like this and perhaps do more harm or something. He said I could get an MRI if it doesn't seem to improve after working out some more.

Anyway, that's the story of how my knee got here.

Symtpoms:
• Instability (since March 9th, seems different at different times, but generally has felt weak since that day, excluding the time my knee felt normal in mid-to-late June)
• Areas that feel weird usually are right below the kneecap (Tibia maybe?) and very slightly to the right of the left kneecap and sometimes back of the leg.
• Tightness in back of calf muscle when walking (sometimes, but more so recently and only while walking)
• Pulsating (sometimes)
• Burning sensation (sometimes, but I think more since going to SA than before. More frequent lately though.)
• Sometimes my foot will feel a little tingly, like my shoe is too tight, but it isn't

I've read it takes several months (more than my two) to rehab your knee, but I haven't restarted working out because I didn't want to do more damage if it's something else, so I'm getting it checked out first by a pro basketball orthopedic surgeon later this month, but I'm just trying to see what your opinions are on this and what you think it could be? Any ideas?
