Osteomyelitis

Had foot surgery 6 weeks ago 5th metatarsal.. For the past week the pain seems to be getting worse and not better.. I went for a xray results stated Focal inflammory process and osteomyelitis.. Probable post traumatic degenerative arthritic changes.. Im not sure what all this mean.. My follow up appt is 2 weeks from now..

Hi,
     How are you? Osteomyelitis is a inflammatory process in the bone and bone marrow due to secondary infection with pyogenic organisms. There are two ways by which this can occur, one due to direct contact during trauma or surgery and the second one is through blood from a secondary focus of infection.
Arthritic changes in a fractured or deformed joints is common and is similar to osteoarthritis in it’s occurrence due to wear and tear.
I would suggest that you get blood cultures done and visit your orthopedician immediately.

My understanding it could be from my recent surgery I just had 6 wks ago..  Is this something that needs immediate attention and will need to take medication..

Hi,
     Yes, your condition requires immediate medical attention. If diagnosed to have osteomyelitis, it can spread to other bones of the body if left untreated. Get blood cultures to determine the causative organism and take appropriate treatment for the same.

Im confused by what i was told from my treating physians. The radiologist                   who read the xrays didnt know i had surgery.. So what different does it make that i had surgery and Osteomyelitis was reported..
