Pain following Micro Fracture procedure

Pain following Micro Fracture procedure

I’m a 42 year old male (6’2” 225), I have lead a very active life including college football, skiing, mtn. biking, golf and working out 4-5 times per week.  After treating pain with IBU I had a Micro Fracture procedure done on the medial side of the articulating cartilage of my right knee just over a year ago.  My rehab went well for seven months and the pain started to come back as if I hadn’t had the procedure.  I continued my activities on a limited basis, I took a break from the gym to help coach youth football, in the hope that the pain was the result of overuse.  Well…I gave in and went back to the orthopedic surgeon.  The new MRI indicates that the Micro Fracture procedure was a success and has healed as good as anyone could have hoped.  As it turns out my parents gave me the gift of bow legs.  I carry most of my body weight on the medial side of both knees (my left knee has also started to hurt), in the exact spot of the Micro Fracture repair.  I feel as though a knee replacement, at this time, would be too aggressive and an osteotomy of the Tibia to realign my legs seems archaic.  The Dr. described an alternative that would not cure the poor alignment but would help to delay the inevitable knee replacement.  Injections of a lubricant called Hyalgan is believed to provide relief in some patients on a 6-10 months basis.  I am considering trying the injections but would be grateful to hear from someone with a similar “odd-ball” condition/circumstance as my own that has had the injections themselves.
