Pott's spine

My son, aged 27,is on ATT (first line)since 24/08/2007 for effected vertebre L5-S1.The MRI taken on 21/08/2008 shows complete healing, but the Radiologist report has the observation that there is streak of fluid at the effected part. The consulting surgeon on examination of MRI has advised to stop futher medication. But we are confused in wake of Radiologist's observation. So,your valuable opinion is solicited for continuation/discontinuation of the treatment at this stage.
Thanks.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your valuable and considered opinion.
We would like you to enlighten us if we should continue with the ATT for further period i.e beyond the regular prescribed period of 12 months.
  Thanks.

Hello surjit1754,

Pott disease is usually secondary to an extraspinal source of infection. The basic lesion is a combination of osteomyelitis and arthritis. Typically, more than one vertebra is involved. The area usually affected is the anterior aspect of the vertebral body adjacent to the subchondral plate. Tuberculosis may spread from that area to adjacent intervertebral disks. In adults, disk disease is secondary to the spread of infection from the vertebral body. This must be the reason for the leak. The healing might be followed by the spread.
Go for a second opinion as well.
