Proximal Bicep Rupture

I'm a 42 yr old high school football coach. I still lift weight avidly and enjoy it extremely. I had been warned by our team trainer that I had two partially torn biceps. I received a cortisone shot about two weeks ago and continued training. While doing bicep curls I noticed a popping noise in my left arm. I quit immediately. The next day we take a family vacation to six flags where the old man gets on  roller coaster and has his arm snapped back. I knew something was wrong immediately and was in minor pain for a couple of hours. On the way home I noticed a lump. The next day I went to our team ortho who said he did not recommend surgery. He knows how much I enjoy lifting so I was excited to hear the news. I've read alot on the web about this injury and see where many people choose to have the surgery. I can't decide what to do. I don't really understand how much this will affect my exercise habits. My ortho says it will be minimal but from some of the stuff i've read I am concerned. What would be your opinion?   On a brighter note, the shoulder that had caused sleepless nights for so long feels like brand new.

I went to the doc today with MRI in hand. Doc says I tore the long bicep tendon and it dropped down forming a knot on the outside of my bicep. He says that he doesn't know anyone who does this operation because the risk is not worth the reward.
I don't want to stay this way does anyone know a doc that can help me,I live in Columbia,Md.   Thanks Keith

I just posted a question very similiar to yours.    If you enjoy weight lifting and sports, have your bicep reattached. The procedure is called a Biceps Tenedosis.   I recently had Rotator Cuff surgery and the surgeon performed a Tenotomy.  That is where he cuts the Long Head of the Bicep.  He did this without my consent.   I am 52, enjoy weight-lifting and do manual labor.  I am very upset he did this   I am going to try to get it reattached if it is not too late.  Now my arm cramps and is deformed and week.  I may lose my job over this.  I understand the repair time is 3-6 months though with your arm in a sling for 6 weeks.  It all depends on how strong your passion is for weight-lifting.  I love it!  I suggest you get all the information you can from web.  I wish I would have, before surgery.  I know alot more now.  Good health to you.Beetle52
