Really weird knee injury

I don't even know how I did this. But I have apparently broken the bone under the area where the patella tendon attaches to the tibia. That was 3+ months ago. I am 55 years old and am putting on weight because I have been giving the knee time to heal. I need to get back to playing racquetball but am afraid! After reading some of the posts about tendon reattachment..........it doesn't sound very encouraging. I get strange little stinging sensations in the knee sometimes but it doesn't really hurt. I am guessing that the bone has healed by now and no I have not stayed off of the leg. I work every day in an office. I don't actually know if the patella tendon ever DETACHED from the bone. I am afraid to exert myself because of those little stings the knee gives me. Am I to immobilize this thing for six weeks and go through that whole rehab? Is what I am saying familiar to anyone out there in been there done that land?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there!

Tendon detachment or fractures in areas of tendon attachment usually require surgical intervention for appropriate healing. Without knowing the area of actual fracture and other relevant clinical details it would be difficult to comment on the situation. I would suggest consulting an orthopedician for an evaluation, to assess the healing of the fracture and suggest appropriate management, if required.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
