Recovery for fractured growth plate at wrist

by Bec64, Jul 01, 2009 10:37PM
Hi,
My 10 yr. old female elite gymnast had a fall and fractured her right wrist at the growth plate which was difficult to discern on X-Ray but has been confirmed to be a fracture.  She is wearing a sling and in 4 days will have a cast put on for 5 weeks. (Just waiting for any swelling to go down) I have two questions for you:
1. What is appropriate / inappropriate training as she will go back to gym to maintain strength and flexibility but I  do not want her to risk any complications for the wrist. (I am assuming there will be no bars, vault or tumbling!)
2. Is physiotherapy usually indicated after the cast comes off?
Thanks in advance for any response!

To: Bec64,
Her immediate treatment is immobilisation atleast for 4-6 weeks.
Proper diet, nutrition rich in calcium and proteins should be followed. At her age healing takes place perfectly and it is a matter of time and you have to plan her long term and forget about her present 3 months.
After proper healing she will be subjected to physiotherapy. Which should be followed slowly and precisely to strengthen herself again. Remember her strength will never be same but it can be achieved near about as before with continous physiotherapy over a period of time. Take care!
