Rotator Cuff

by opusbar1, Nov 26, 2007 08:07PM
I had rotator cuff surgery this month for a deep tear of my rotator cuff. I am trying to do passive exercises that my physical therapist and surgeon recommended but I am having severe pain even after a light therapy session. I am worried that I may have re-injured the tear by moving too quickly on my rehab. I am 52 years old, in good shape and want to do the proper things to get on with my life. Is getting a follow up MRI a viable option for me, for both peace of mind along with any cautionary benefits?

Hi,
Wait another 2 weeks before you could get an repeat MRI done.Normally it take 6-8 weeks for a complete recovery. At 52 if you do not have any complications it will take 8 weeks to heal, you got the operation done this month meaning it is hardly 4 weeks now, please wait. But,do only mild exercises ,donot be over enthusiastic and injure yourself.Have a second opinion from an orthopaedic surgeon.

Hi,
Following any surgical intervention on musculoskeletal  system, it would require few weeks time for everything to settle down. A  tear in the muscle roughly takes about 4-5  weeks time.
Continue physiotherapy as and when advised under the guidance of physiotherapist.

Hi, Yes it seems to be little early to go for an repeat MRI as still your injury is in the process of healing and may require couple of weeks time, meanwhile you can consult the same orthopedician who had operated you for review check up. Tel your physiotherapist about the pain you suffer while doing or after physiotherapy, if required you may have to take complete rest.

I have a question regarding these answers. Why would it be too soon to have an MRI if opusbar1 thinks he may have re torn his rotator cuff?

If the rotator cuff was repaired correctly when he had his original surgery then why would his healing process of this be a reason for him to wait to have an MRI?

If he's maybe re torn the muscle or re torn a different shoulder muscle, wouldn't it be advisable to get this checked asap to give him peace of mind?

Why should he wait? I am very interested to know what your reasons for this are.
