Second opinion on a fractured metacarpel with k-wire fixation

I fractured my 5th metacarpel, an oblique fracture of the shaft. Original x-Ray showed it was not displaced and I was in a cast for 2 weeks. At my follow up fracture had displaced and I had rotational deformity. Surgery was recommended. A week ago I had a k wire inserted. My surgeon has said he will remove my cast after 4 weeks but won't remove the wire for 3 months!!! This is contrary to everything I've read and I wonder if anyone has experienced this? How can I move my hand with a wire remaining?
