Shin Splint? or other ... Do I need to see my GP

Hello

I have been attending Zumba classes for about 6 months and my Instructor recently (about 6 weeks ago) encorporated a new routine wher you turn one way then hop back in the opposite direction. During this move I felt pain down the front of my shin which stopped when I did. In the past 3 weeks I have attended Karate with my children and practiced round kicks which have given me a similar pain in my shin when balancing on the Left leg.

This week I have felt an ache in my shin after walking, then since Karate this past Thursday I have had a constant pain in my shin. this eases a little with rest but does not completely go. my left ankle and shin is at least 1 inch wider than the right (tape measure round limb). Pain becomes worse with weight bearing activity,I find myself limping and if I put light pressure on my shin and lift my foot up there is a creaking feeling/vibration in the shin area? I cannot imagine doing any exercise at the minute. (no redness or temperature on the painful area, but foot is a little cold).

Thankyou for reading

Lizzy

One of my friends have suggested shin splints, but doesn't the pain dissapear with rest?

Hey Lizzy!

The pain in shin splints may or may not improve with rest and yes, it is a possible diagnosis. Possibilities that may need to be ruled out are stress fractures, injuries/ trauma, inflammation like periostitis etc, neuromuscular/ vascular issues, micronutrient deficiencies etc. You may consider an evaluation by a primary care physician or an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
