Should I put preschooler on crutches?

Should I put preschooler on crutches?

Our 5 yr old son has an (undiagnosed) issue with his right tibia.  His pain is almost constant but the intensity fluctuates.

This week, I've often seen him "scoot" on his bum down the stairs because it hurts to walk.  When he plays or walks around, he compensates by hopping on the other leg or walking with a limp - he points his toe out 90 degrees to avoid the point/flex in his step.  OR he asks me to carry him places.

Any opinion on whether I should offer him a crutch (or crutches) at times?  I am worried about the rest of his body (hips, other knee etc) getting overuse/abuse from his compensation.  He has started to complain about them at times.   It's the awkward walk that bothers me the most.

We avoid the obvious, high impact activities, but otherwise allow him to play freely.

(note:  as in previous post - we are working on finding a diagnosis for the right tibia and waiting for an MRI).

Thank you.

Hi again!

I did recollect your last post in trying to find a diagnosis for periosteal reaction when all other tests had turned out to be normal, I suppose. Assuming that the blood tests have also been normal and you an awaiting an MRI to show soft tissue issues if any, I would suggest conservative management for the time being. Crutches should not hurt, though I would still suggest getting a final word from his orthopedician. I would also suggest trying to limit activities such as sports if it helps. (it may be difficult in a 5 yr old but should be given a try).
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
