Sprain and shin splints?

I am a 51 year old female who practices martial arts. I am very fit and have had good bone density readings. 7 days ago I was taken down to the ground twice, landing on the same place from my upper outside left shin to the ankle, and a heavy opponent landed on me. It was very painful. The next day my whole lower leg and foot were extremely sore and  felt hot. Each day it got more painful and I could barely stand. My trainer said I had shin splints. The pain in the shin is going down but since yesterday my ankle and foot are grossly swollen and are turning brown and purple from one side of the foot to the other. I thought swelling and bruising would present at the time of injury. I'm wondering if this is more serious than I thought?
