Surgery??

I am writing this for my husband. He is twenty eight and on sunday he fell and broke his tibia and fibula in the tibula it was cracked all the way down to his ankle. My husband is worried about the poss. of surgery. His leg is now in a splint up to his thigh. The break was a clean break strait across in about the mid section of his leg. He of course is in pain. The only time i allow him to get up is when he goes to the restroom and he has not put any weight on it at all since he broke it. One question is when he does let the leg drop as he walks on the crutches his foot turns a blue color is there a problem with that?? Another question is can they not put it in a cast bc my husband is very fearfull of the surgery? He just fell on it the wrong way i guess. Could he have a problem with his bones being so young? I have read and most of the tibia fibula fractures is caused by car, ski and other such activities.

Well it is been 2 weeks in the long leg cast. He is going to be in that for one more week. Dr. says that he will be able to go to a short leg cast next monday. My husband keeps asking me over and over. Will his leg be back to normal. I have told him over time it will get better. This is true isnt it? I hope so. He is a very active individual. Will it bother him after a period of time? What can we expect to be his healing time?

Hi,
Lateral Malleolus fracture means that there is a fracture on outer side of ankle joint. I didn't get the second one written by you.
Yes indeed you should be calling the doctor to ask regarding foot turning blue and feeling of numbness after putting on cast. There could be nerve compression after putting on the cast causing numbness.
Keep me posted regarding your visit to the doctor.
Bye.

Well we went back thurs. and they said that the bones were in place and it doesnt look like he will have the surgery. They put him in a long leg cast that is bent in a sitting position. Is that bent too much he has been complaining of more pain since they put the cast on vs. the splint. he says that he feels like his foot is asleep most of the time. do i need to call the dr. to see if the cast is cutting off circulation? or is in a bad position. We go back friday to make sure the bones are still in the right place.

Hi,
I feel sorry that your husband has to go through all this.
His symptom of foot turning blue after dropping his leg suggests that doing this movement his fracture fragments would be obstructing an artery or blood supply to his foot has it is turning blue. You need a Doppler study and MRI to check this out.
If it is an open fracture as you have mentioned, then it is not possible to treat without surgery.
No it is not due to his bones being young; fractures are always due to impact of injury in a healthy young male.
Yes as I have told you it is impact and nature of injury which causes fracture.
Keep me posted if you have any queries.
Bye.
