Thumb Spasms

Thumb Spasms

It's just my thumbs and they keep drawing up into spasms.  It' hard to write, drive, or do most anything when this happens.  I was in a "freak" accident last month where a man fell on the upper part of my back and shoulder.  They have done X-rays and nothing is broken; just bruised from the T1,T2 C7,6,5.  Yet ever since the accident a month ago this has been happening. At first it was not painful; just annoying.  Now it holds on and it radiates up my arm and it is painful and tiresome.  Until they can come up with what to do and what is wrong; can anyone tell me what to do to keep my thumb straight?  Is there any kind of device I can put on it to hold it away from the palm of my hand?  Thanks.

Hello Dear,

Spinal cord injury may change both the distribution and the strength of the synaptic input within a motoneuron pool and modulate the force gradation and the functioning of the muscles of thumb drawing the thumb into a form of spasm and flexion. Thisconsiderably decreases the function of the hand because of the loss of muscular control and the predominant flexion of the thumb.

The management of the spinal injury would result in the acceleration of the healing process of the thumb.
Consult the physiotherapist for further evaluation.

Take care
