Torn Meniscus?

by Ruggergirl, Jul 30, 2008 10:35PM
I am a 26 year old, female rugby player with I possible knee injury. Over the past three years or so, I have had pain on the outside of my left knee. It started out as slight pain and slowly got worse. I played college rugby for 5 years and the athletic trainer for my team said that I needed to stretch my IT band more and the problem would go away...wrong. I tried that and it was zero help. Because I have no health insurance, I was unable to go get it looked at, but it was never really bad enough to really worry about it. Then this year, I played in a rugby tourn in march and at the end of the day, my knee hurt so bad, I could hardly walk. I asked the paramedics at the tourn for some ice and they insisted on looking at my knee...they told me they thought I had a torn meniscus. Once again, no insurance to worry about it and within about 3 days...the pain was gone. Now, I'm starting to play rugby for a women's team in Chicago and ran 2 miles yesterday and my knee kills. I have looked up different knee issues and I'm not sure where my symptoms fit...The pain is on the outside of my left knee. It does not swell really and it does not bruise. It begins to hurt only when I am using my knee a lot such as walking a lot or any sport. If I stop activity, within a few days, the pain will go away...but comes back as soon as I start activity. I still dont have insurance and probably wont get it looked at because I cannot afford to...do you have any suggestions on if it is a torn meniscus or something else? And if I cannot get it treated, any suggestions on how to make it not as painful so I can play rugby. Thank you for your help and for being here to answer questions for everyone.

Hello Dear,
Knee pain is extremely common in athletes. In order to treat the cause of the pain, it is important to have an evaluation and proper diagnosis. Common reasons for knee pain in athletes include the following knee Ligament Injuries, torn Knee cartilage, chondromalacia, tendonitis, osreoarthritis. You should see a orthopedic physician or a sports professional and do not take it lightly.Unless any investigations are done the diagnosis cannot be confirmed, get the evaluation done.
