Vanicular Bone surgery

Vanicular Bone surgery

I am based in India. My son is 13 years old and has been detected with Accesory vanicular bone. He is a football player and very much a sports person. What is the recovery time after surgery? Will it affect his playing football or other sports?
Please advise.

Hi there!

An accessory navicular bone is an accessory bone of the foot that occasionally develops abnormally in front of the ankle towards the inside of the foot. Approximately 2-12% of people may have this and is usually asymptomatic. When it is symptomatic, surgery may be necessary. Post-surgically, it my take 6-8 weeks to heal and another 2-6 months before complete weight bearing. For the recovery time he will not be allowed sports and then activities can be initiated gradually. The possibility of active indulgence in sports later would depend on the recovery and it would be best to discuss the situation in detail with the operating surgeon. Hope this information was useful.

Take care!
