When will pain go away after getting a cast for a broken scaphoid?

I was playing volleyball and fell on my left wrist on 8/14/10.  I thought it was just a bad sprain and waited a week to get it checked.  It was confirmed that I broke my scaphoid bone.  Great.  I had a cast put on 8/25 and was in extreme agony for the 9 days that followed.  I went back to the ortho and they put a new cast on 9/3 (due to first cast being at an incorrect angle).  This one feels much better and most of the tingling and shooting pains are gone.  I now have miserable pain in my wrist where it feels like an ice pick is being inserted in one side and out the other.  

I was under the impression that once you have a cast, the pain will subside.  I have had this new cast on for a week now and am still experiencing throbbing and stabbing pain in my wrist.  Am I just not being patient enough?  Will there be a time that this pain will go away?  I'm far from being a baby, but having constant pain is getting old.  

I was just wondering if anyone who has broken their scaphoid, has had constant pain or if it went away or when can I expect some relief.   I go back for another cast and xrays on 9/24....can't wait...that's my kinda fun ;)
