When will the pain end? I have plate and screws in my left ankle

I broke my ankle and leg in 3 places in June 2009. I was hospitalized for one week. I have a plate and 7 screws. It got infected and I was in the hospital for another week. It is November 2009 and I am in a lot of pain. All the pain had left and then all of a sudden it returned. I went to doctor to have it x-rayed. Doctor says everything is in place and that I would be feeling pain for at least a year, especially when it rains. I have soaked my foot in Epsom Salt and take so many Advil, that I think my system is immuned to the Advil. What could this be? All the hardware is still in place. He said that sometimes it would hurt around the hardware, to expect pain for a little while longer.

Part of the pain is just because the tendons around your ankle weren't used for so long that they need time to get used to being used again and will strengthen over time.

Did you go through Physio?  If yes then keep doing the exercises they gave you as much as you can.  Try getting some type of heating pad and when you are resting or just watching TV put your foot up with the heating pad on it.

If the doctor says everything is fine then it should get better gradually.  But it will come and go some depending on your activity level and the weather.  The hardware will make that leg feel colder and sore in cold or rainy weather.

Personally I'm broke my leg right above the ankle both bones about 11 months ago and I still get some pain.  Not enough to always take Advil but sometimes I still do.  From what I've read on the internet some people experience pain for over a year.  But I am going to check with my surgeon to make sure things are okay.  Because sometimes the hardware moves or irritates the tendons or something.  So I've read stories of people who have had their hardware removed.

Since you're only 6 months post surgery you might want to wait a bit.  From above it looks like you saw your doctor recently if thats correct wait a few weeks and see if things get better.  If they don't see your doctor.

Good Luck
