acl tear and growth plates not closed

acl tear and growth plates not closed

My son is 14 & 5'11.  He has always been big for his age.  He has a torn acl & surgery has been recommended.  His growth plates haven't closed.  We had a bone age test xray on his wrist & it showed age of  a 16-17 year old.  His growth charts have always shown him to be at 6'0-6'2 by adulthood.  My husband is 5'9, I'm 5'2, but my father in law is 6'0 and my brother is 6'3.  Don't know what to do. he can have the surgery or be in a working knee brace until he's ready for surgery.  Want to get his knee fixed but don't want to stump his growth.  Also, if we have the surgery & his growth plate is disturbed in his left leg...what happens to his right leg as far as his growth plates.   Am very confued as to what to do.

Hello!

What type of surgery he is having on his acl is important!

This can be arthroscopic also without disturbing the bones. You can go for a reconstruction by giving a graft to the torn acl if this is a severe injury.

Discuss with an expert orthopedician and go for a more conservative approach and with arthroscopic surgeries and his age he will recover very fast.

Till you take a decision he can always wear a knee brace.

Take care!
