ankle sprain w/ dropfoot

ankle sprain w/ dropfoot

My daughter, 13, sustained a severe ankle sprain during a volleyball game.  She jumped then landed on an inverted foot, as she went down she leaned backwards (still trying not to hit the net) and wound up sliding with her knees flexed, ankles underneath her.  This was 5 days ago. She still cannot tolerate more that a few pounds of weight bearing or actively dorsiflex her ankle more than a few degrees.  She has paresthesia along the top of the foot and bruising across the top of the ankle and laterally.  She had an xray the night of the injury, which was negative for fracture.  They gave her a splint with lateral uprights and assure me it will get better, but i am concerned about the position of her foot and feel she needs more support to prevent the foot drop position and, possibly, reduce tension on the nerve.  Any insights/suggestions?  How long should I wait before taking her back to her doctor or getting an ortho referral?  She is very active in sports and I am concerned about the long term.

Hi, this seem to be ligament injury which take around 4-6 weeks for complete recovery. Ligaments are injured when a greater than normal stretching force is applied to them. This happens when the foot is turned inward or inverted. Please ask her to use pillow or cushion below her foot while sleeping and don't sit with legs hanging, this will avoid or reduce swelling at ankle.

Continue anti inflammatory drugs. Wait for 2 weeks at least before consulting ortho surgeon
