A fracture of a bone causes bruising and swelling. If your toe is not pointing in an odd angle and you have a fracture an assumption is a hairline fracture and the toe is buddy taped to the next toe for 4-6 weeks while healing, to immobalize the fracture. A piece of gauze is placed between the taped toes to prevent skin problems. This describes a simple distal toe fracture. If injury is further up the foot treatment varies depending on type of fracture and placement. Get an x ray to verify injury and recieve treatment by a physician would be the appropriate advice.
Bruising and swelling will resolve in time, elevate foot above heart level to reduce swelling are the general recommendations
