broken wrist pic attached - treatment?

Hi - I am 33 years old.  I fell backwards violently and (reactively)  threw my hand out behind me to break the fall.

I broke my wrist on my right hand _ I am right handed.

I am wondering if I will require surgery? Or if putting on a cast will be adequate? I am worried about possible lack of mobility and long term effects - arthritis in the family?

I hope you have had a Merry Christmas I appreciate feedback and wish you the best in 2011

Hello, Most often, broken wrists can be treated in a cast. The wrist is one area of your body that is very amenable to cast treatment. As you are young, your surgeon may advise you surgery for this but unlikely. The rule for bone healing in general is to expect a six-week period to ensure proper bone strength. One-two additional weeks of support in a removal plastic splint is generally advised. All the best.
