calcaneous fracture

by lovnlif100, Mar 13, 2009 12:00PM
Hello.  I fractured my calcaneous during a kayaking trip in December.  It was not immediately diagnosed... in fact was not diagnosed for 8 weeks.  An MRI revealed the calcaneous fractured in 3 pieces.  It was nondisplaced with slightly joint involvement.  I was immobilized for 1 week followed by 3 weeks of a cast.  Then 3 weeks in PT though not really as the pain was too great to weight bear.  I was then diagnosed and back in a boot for 3 - 4 weeks. I did not have surgery.  Now, I am back in PT.  I can walk though I still experience swelling. My doctor indicated that although I was not diagnosed, my treatment was appropriate...or at least near to it.  I have been told that the swelling may persist for up to a year.  My calcaneous is slightly flattened - I have a bit of a fatter foot. Every part of my body has hurt at one time of the other over the past 3 months.  I am quite active, so this is very difficult.  I am wondering which exercises I can do to promote going down stairs.  I have 3 flights of stairs to my house.  Other than what I am doing as indicated above, is there anything else you would recommend?

hi buddy,
calcaneal fractures heal in 3 months time without much attention except for rest. So don't worry. Your doctor has given you the perfect advice, so please continue with that.
regards

Whew, that's a long one to type.  Thanks so much for your speady response.  Also, thanks for confirming the treatment.  The MRI does say... a fracture plane does extend to the subtalar joint space; however no fracture is seen of the the talas.  All tendons and ligaments are intact, if not grossly so.... There's a contusion of talas.  One more question... is the swelling associated with the above?  This slight joint involvement does not warrant surgery, I understand?  I realize you can't treat me but just looking for some idea about this treatment.  Will the tendons and ligaments continue to swell?  I have significant swelling at the joint... upon standing or anything.  I've read quiet a bit and I think this will be the situation for a while?  How long would I expect that?  I realize the calcaneous is healed and it does show it is... Thanks for your review.    By the way, I'm a woman :)  from sunny California!
