displaced fracture in thumb metacarpal bone

displaced fracture in thumb metacarpal bone

Hi...10 days ago i fractured my thumb skiing (double ejected and the pole levered it back).  Thought it was sprained...but it swelled overnight and was numb and weird in the morning. I work in a ski resort, so went to see the resort doctor who xrayed it and said i had a displaced fracture in the metacarpal bone. the ligament was stronger than the bone and hadn't snapped like in normal skiiers thumb. i think he said the fracture was a spiral fracture, and it was about 1.5mm displaced. he sent me down the mountain to have a pin put in.

the french doc down the mountain was pretty flippant about it, didn't want it pinned just prescribed a splint. didn't prescribe anti inflammatories, painkillers or anything. scheduled me for a follow up appointment in 4 weeks time. when i went to buy the splint the guys at the pharmacy couldn't get it on me due to the swelling, and it left the broken area exposed, so i didn't buy it. went back to ski resort doc the next day with my hand still temp bound up and he was a bit unhappy that it hadn't been immobilised for 48hrs and i hadn't been taking anti-inflammatories. he said that because i have to keep doing manual work and will no doubt be skiing again before it has healed properly that a splint was unsuitable, so put it in a cast.  anyway, after all this im left feeling a bit distrustful that the french doctor made the right decision in not pinning it. i'm not a hypochondriac but its in my right hand, and im right handed, so really dont want to have problems with it in the future. should i be having a follow up xray sooner than a month to make sure it hasn't moved? would a pin normally be put in for a fracture like this? sorry for the long post!!
