effects of bad casting

effects of bad casting

I fell in April and ended up with a distal radius fracture (at the time assumed to be a Colles fracture, now come to find out it was a Barton's fracture) Anyway, doing some research to try to understand why all my complications occured and hoping you all have some information for me.
I broke it April 10th, long arm cast for two weeks, repositioned hand and another long arm cast for 2 weeks, then munster cast for 2 weeks.  Throughout this time the swelling in my fingers did not come down and I could not move them..now I'm thinking largely from the way I was cast.  After the casts came off the swelling increased to my entire hand and I had nearly zero mobility in my fingers.  It took nearly 3 months to get my hand usage back to within normal range and my fingers are still rather uncooperative at times (and achy-stiff a good amount of the time)
I switched doctors over the summer becasue the original guy was not helping with some other complications.  He said I had RSD and nerve blocks were the only thing that could help (other than the swelling and stiffness, I had no other symptoms but I did have some visible deformity of the wrist--story for another time).  My new doctor is not sure about the RSD, but I'm wondering if the swelling and stiffness could have been due to poor casting instead of RSD??  I moved the my fingers as much as each cast would allow, but they so far up my hand that movement was quite limited.
I would appreciate any input you all have.
Blessings!
Sally
